The storied tradition of Mansfield Senior football faced a new chapter Friday night as Antonio Fletcher stepped onto the field for the first time as the head coach of the Tygers. Unfortunately, the home opener did not go according to plan, culminating in a 38-7 loss to a formidable Hilliard Davidson team. Nonetheless, amidst the defeat, there were glimmers of promise that should keep Tyger fans happy.

The game commenced with the Wildcats exerting pressure early on, showcasing a talented offense that seemed intent on making an emphatic statement. Mansfield's defense, under Fletcher's guidance, demonstrated grit and tenacity, managing to slow down Davidson’s high-octane attack for a while. At halftime, the scoreboard reflected a 17-7 lead for the Wildcats.

Ryan Au's one-yard touchdown run just before the halftime whistle was a good sign for Mansfield. Last season the Tygers only mustered three rushing touchdowns and seeing Au get one early was a good sign. Set up by a 56-yard connection between sophomore quarterback Sean Tanner and senior wide receiver Tai Pickett, this moment encapsulated what the Tygers aim to build moving forward: explosive plays.

The second half presented a more challenging landscape for Mansfield. Davidson, with its disciplined coaching staff, made the necessary adjustments to stifle the Tygers' attempts at a comeback. The Wildcat depth was able to outlast Mansfield and Davidson's defense tightened its grip, ultimately wearing down the Tygers and leading to a 38-7 defeat.

As the Tygers look toward week two of the Fletcher era, they will find themselves pitted against the Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes, who similarly faced defeat in their opening matchup against Fremont Ross, 13-9. Mansfield Senior will travel to Tiffin and kick off at 7 o'clock Friday night.
