Legend in the Making: Freshman Legend Bey Flashes His Potential Debut

COLUMBUS, Ohio —

His name is Legend Bey, and if Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium was any indication, the true freshman running back might have a chance to live up to that name in Columbus.

Bey made the most of his opportunities in Ohio State’s dominant 56-3 victory over Ball State, providing Buckeye fans with their first real glimpse of one of the most intriguing young playmakers on the roster.

The freshman carried the ball six times for 37 yards, averaging better than six yards per attempt. He also showed that his talents extend beyond the backfield, catching two passes for 37 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown.

It was only eight touches, but Bey turned them into 74 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. Not bad for your first Saturday in the Horseshoe. Bey arrived at Ohio State with plenty of hype surrounding his athletic ability.

The former high school quarterback from North Forney High School in Texas was one of the most versatile athletes in the 2026 recruiting class. During his high school career, he proved capable of beating defenses with both his arm and his legs before making the transition to running back in Columbus.

Head coach Ryan Day has already offered a glimpse into how highly Ohio State thinks of Bey’s potential, comparing his explosiveness to some exceptionally dynamic players. Day called Bey a “poor man’s Tyreek Hill” earlier this year, while comparisons to former Ohio State standout Curtis Samuel have also followed the freshman.

Those are enormous comparisons for an 18-year-old who is only beginning his college career. But Saturday showed why Ohio State is so excited.

Bey possesses the kind of speed and acceleration that can turn an ordinary play into something much bigger. His ability to contribute as both a runner and receiver could eventually make him a dangerous chess piece for the Buckeyes’ offense. Put him in the backfield, move him into space, throw him the football or potentially give him opportunities on special teams — there are plenty of possibilities. The ceiling appears extremely high.

Yet Bey’s journey to Columbus was anything but conventional. He initially committed to Tennessee before flipping to Ohio State in November 2025. On Early Signing Day, however, Bey signed with Tennessee despite having indicated he wanted to attend Ohio State. Bey later said he had been under intense pressure from members of his family to choose Tennessee. After turning 18, he obtained his release from Tennessee and ultimately signed with Ohio State — the school he had wanted to attend.

That background is important, but it should also be handled carefully. Bey is now a young adult beginning a new chapter, and what matters most going forward is how he responds to the opportunities and responsibilities that come with playing at Ohio State. Talent has never appeared to be the question.

Development, maturity and maintaining the right mindset will be critical. That’s where playing for Ryan Day and Ohio State could benefit Bey tremendously. Day has built a program where expectations extend well beyond what happens on Saturdays. Bey doesn’t need to become a superstar overnight. He needs to learn, develop, remain patient and allow Ohio State’s coaching staff and veteran players to help him adjust to life as a major college football player.

There will inevitably be growing pains. That’s part of being a true freshman. But if Bey keeps his focus, responds positively to coaching and continues developing, Ohio State could have something special on its hands.

The Buckeyes don’t necessarily need Bey to become their featured running back immediately. With plenty of talent already in the backfield, Ohio State has the luxury of bringing him along at the right pace and finding creative opportunities to utilize his athleticism.

Saturday was simply the first chapter. Six carries. Two receptions. Seventy-four total yards. One touchdown. A small sample size, certainly. But sometimes it doesn’t take many touches to notice when a player has something different.

Legend Bey has serious potential. Now comes the most important part: turning that potential into consistency, staying grounded and allowing Day and the Ohio State coaching staff to help mold him both as a player and young man.

If that happens, Buckeye fans could be hearing the name Legend Bey inside Ohio Stadium for years to come. And someday, his name might prove to be more than fitting.
